A little bit of Vintage...

I'm going to get a reputation as a rebel on this blog, you see, this month is all about Vintage and Nature and using the foils... Well.......I didn't have the foils when I started this card, didn't fancy Nature, but really wanted to do Vintage...So 1 out of 3 isn't bad.
Start off with a folded piece of card stock to the finished size of your card, then make a layer slightly small than your card.
I've stamped flourishes in Bright White Powder, but, before I embossed, I "distressed" the powder by removing bits with a paintbrush, this gives a more Vintage feel to the card.

As with 99% of my cards, I have to add ribbon, I just love it, I can't help it, it's one of my weaknesses. Whilst teaching for WOW at the Hobby Craft Show in Birmingham, a question I got asked a lot is "can you emboss onto ribbon"? and the answer is YES !!! Just do tests on the ribbon you want to use and keep the heat gun moving, so as not to burn it. I've used Seam Binding for this one, but it also works on good quality Grosgrain.
Just lay your ribbon nice and flat, ink up your stamp, I've used the Brocade Background one, and press firmly against the ribbon, add your powder, I used Pepper, shake off the excess and heat.
Repeat the pattern along to the length you require.
Add a few pearls and a sentiment taken from the Everyday Sentiments Stamp Set, ohhh and a little bit of twine, lets not forget the twine !! and there you have it

Discovering foils

Hello, Doris here from cheappsychology.co.uk. I have had a wonderful time trying out the foils and making them work for me.

On this flower journal I used the bonding powder with WOW stamps to embellish the background of the front cover. The letters are created from carton. I stuck double sided tape on it before die cutting the letters. Then foiled the letters by dabbing parts of the sticky surface on the white foil and then the gold foil.

Then I started thinking about what else these foils might stick to. I had heard somebody say that they stick to laser printed images. My laser printer is dead so I could not test that, but I tried them on acrylic paints and that works astonishingly well. Dry acrylic paint and a bit of free form hard rubbing gives you an instant distressed look. I particular love using the white foil which has a matte finish for this - a great distressing tool! And it is permanent. See the dots on that back page? The are the negative of the dots on the front page. Do not throw away your used foils. You can rub off what is remaining on acrylic paint and get double the shape for your money!
Continuing to play, I tried the foils  together with painted die cuts. I made a sandwich - foil on top of die cut and  put them together in an embossing folder and rolled them through the die cutting machine. Voila: Another winner!! The flower on the journal is created with turquoise acrylic paint and gold foil.
I achieved some wonderful looks - even with the brighter 'in your face' foil colours. Gorgeous two tone shimmers, that would be difficult to achieve with anything else. Or the foil just settled in the lines to highlight the dry embossing. Impossible to achieve with anything else!

Gold foil on brown acrylic paint:

Your turn now! Have a play!

Anniversary Card

Hello to all you lovely blog readers, it's Sarah here and I have a foil inspired card to share with you today.

I have been playing with the fabulous range of foils from Wow and have created a card to send to my boyfriend for our anniversary (I hope he doesn't read this post before I send it!) :O

I used a laser printer to print out a damask pattern onto a copper coloured card and then cut a piece of Gold Foil to cover the printed area. I then sandwiched this between two sheets of standard white copier paper and put this through my laminator. The foil adheres to the toner ink and this created a perfect gold damask pattern. Also, the great thing about a damask background pattern is that the left over foil can be used with a full printed toner sheet (I used a scrap piece I had lying around) and this creates a second background pattern design to use on a different project.

To create the embellishments on the card, I added some ribbon, printed out a heart onto white shimmery card and foiled this using the Red foil and then to finish added a tag with sentiment that was heat embossed in apple red.

Vintage foiled frames

Hi, it's Amy here again with a scrapbook page using the fantastic foils. For this months designer's challenge I wanted to create a vintage page with photos of some of the men in my family tree. I chose the Dark Blue, Turquoise and Green foils as they fitted with the mens theme and used them to cover die cut frames for my photos (see tutorial below).

The background paper fits perfectly as it has blue, green and brown tones in it so I deliberately chose sepia photos to accent the brown tones. Once I had decided on the photo layout I added some vintage themed embellishments. Finish with some journaling and you have a really nice page. Hope you like it.

Here are some close ups of the detail

To create your own fab foiled frames:

1.  Select 2 sizes of die for the frame and 1 size which is between these 2 in order to cut the photo neatly to fit behind the frame. Die cut the photo.

2. Cover a piece of card slightly larger than the frame size with extra wide double sided tape. Leave the backing on. Place the 2 dies cutting edge down onto the double sided tape and secure with a couple more small pieces of tape. Die cut the frame.

3. Remove your frame and peel the backing off the tape. Carefully place the foil sheet, (shiny side up), over the adhesive and rub gently. Begin to slowly peel away the backing. I found that it helps to have a bone folder to hand and if there are any small sections where the foil has not stuck you can just rub gently with the bone folder to help the process.

4. Stick your photo behind the frame.

"Hidden Among the Flowers" - Nature Theme Scrapbook Page

Hello again. Christine Saunders here with a Scrapbook page for the "Nature" theme for this month using WoW Foils. The Scrapbook page is called "Hidden among the flowers".  Yes, I am in there somewhere.

I love foils as they add that little bit of bling to your Scrapbook pages and cards. Here's how I made the Scrapbook page: Iv'e a great "Top Tip" for you on how to use your Foils with PVA Glue.
Read on..........

I ripped the edges of a piece of brown cardstock and inked the edges with a brown dye pad. I also ripped the photo and another piece of inked cardstock and layered them onto my 8" x 8" patterned page to form the background.

I then stamped the "Brocade" stamp with brown ink onto adhesive paper - once the ink was dry I added gold foil on top which then stuck to the rest of the uninked part of the image. I then dye cut this into swirls for the bottom of the page.

I placed some PVA glue onto a stamping block, spread it out and inked up my leaf stamp taken from the Wow Stamp set "Gratitude" with the glue. I repeated this 5 times and left the glue on the leaves to dry. I then "huffed"  onto the leaves and placed my gold foil on top- the foil sticks to the PVA once it has gone clear - if you "huff" slightly onto the glue the foil then sticks evenly and looks fabulous.  I then cut out the leaves and arranged them on my page.

I also followed the veins on some coloured paper leaves with PVA glue, and repeated the process with the foils.  The writing on this Scrapbook page "Hidden Among the Flowers" achieved in exactly the same way.   I used a fine nozzle attached to my PVA glue nozzle to write the words free-hand with the glue. The finishing touches were made by adding flowers punched out of brown cardstock and purple foiled sticky backed paper for constrast.

Time for you to go and experiment with your PVA glue and your foils now. Have fun.......

Vintage Lady

Hi Everyone.

The Simply Amazing stamps shouted out to me this month.  I designed this for the NEC stand.

Materials needed:
Tag.
Ribbon.
Die cut scroll.
Gem.
Backing paper with script on it.
Distress inks in chipped sapphire, black soot, vintage photo, milled lavender.
Adirondack – woodlands.

Martha Stuart punch.
Clear embossing ink.
WOW stamp sets:
WOW Embossing powders:

Take your white tag and stamp dots on each side with clear embossing ink.  Sprinkle clear embossing powder and heat set.   Once cool put distress ink over the tag in blue, purple and go around the edges in black.  Rub off excess over the embossing with a piece of kitchen towel (resist technique).
Use a piece of plain card stock to make a mat/layer to the next tag which is smaller than the first.
Stamp the brocade on white card stock with clear embossing ink, sprinkle with clear embossing powder and heat set.  Once cool put Adirondack woodlands ink over the embossing.  Rub off excess over the embossing.(resist technique). Cut this in a smaller tag shape.
Use your edge punch down both sides of a piece of white card.  Colour this in with the same distress inks you used for the original tag.
Get a piece of ribbon which co-ordinates with your colour theme and place down the centre of the punched piece of card.
Stamp out the cameo frame with clear embossing ink and emboss with Copper powder and cut out.  Colour the edges in the same colours you used for the brocade layer.
Stamp out the cameo of the ladies face in clear embossing ink onto backing paper with script on it and emboss with lagoon powder. Cut this out and glue onto the frame.
Use a gem for a jewel around the neck.  Die cut a scroll and put the tag together.
Use ribbon through the hole at the top of the tag.

Another technique is using the pearlescent embossing powders over the foil.

Take your stamp, I've used  Make a Wish and stamp out in versmark.  Then sprinkle bonding powder over the top.  Heat set until tacky.  Take a piece of foil and place over the stamped image then either rub the foil (shiny side upwards) over the top, or use an iron without steam placing it over the stamped image, foil and a piece of copy paper, or if not too thick run it through a laminator. (full instructions on the foil packaging). Don't worry if areas are missing or has not been foiled, it only adds to the distressed look.  Stamp the same image over the other one (it will look slightly off, don't get it perfectly over the top of the other)in versamark and sprinkle one of the pearlescent coloured embossing powders over the top.  These embossing powders are all white in the jar, only when you heat them do they change colours.  You can get some fantastic effects 'shadow' stamping.

I'll show you the thin layer of embossing powder technique next time.

Sister Tag

Hi everyone. It's Sandie here and it's my turn to spread a little inspiration using WOW! products.

Today I have created a 'Sister' tag. I inked the tag with distress ink before stamping the backround using Call Me clear stamp set in Brushed Cordoroy ink.

I then heat embossed one of the cute images from the Child's Play clear stamp set with Bright White embossing powder and trimmed it out. I adhered it to a kraft die cut with 3D foam dots.

The sentiment is from Simply Amazing clear stamp set and I also used Bright White on that. To embellish I added some velvet ric-rac and green satin ribbon.

Foiled Flower Card

Hi Folks, Rachel here with my project for this months challenge.

I decided to make a card this month using a mask, instead of stamps with the foils, to give a different look.

I created my background by spritzing mica mists onto white card. After drying I put my mask on top and inked through with Versamark ink, then removed the mask and covered with WOW! Bonding Powder; it only adheres to the inked areas. and as you put the rest back in the pot a little goes a long way!
I set the Bonding Powder slightly by heating with a WOW! Heat Gun and then, using the WOW!Snowy White Fab Foil, I covered the image and ran it through my laminator, (I chose to use the white foil as it has a subtle shine and I didn't want it to have to compete with the mica mist background I'd spritzed).  After matting and layering on complementary card I used thin high tack tape to edge my topper and covered this with WOW! Bright Gold Fab Foil. The tape really grabs the foil and gives a great finish; good for borders or that 'little something extra' that cards often need!  A few punched butterflies from my waste background paper and one 'Nature' card finished!

Thanks for stopping by,

Fun with foils

Hi there,
Nikki again.
This time I have been playing with the WOW range of foils and a mini card (I really am enjoying making lots of mini cards at the moment).....
The background was created using some double sided tape. - Place the double sided tape on the card, peel of the paper and add the foils. The detail in the corner (the 3 little red dots), is done the same way - only this time I used foam dots.
To create the cameo, I stamped the image using clear ink and bonding powder.
When the bonding powder was heat set I added the foil and then reheated the area with a heat gun.
When you take off the foil sheet the image will be foiled.
It's a fun technique and the foils add that element of luxury to your cards.
Give it a go and let us know how you get on.

You will find the items that I used over on the WOW website here...

The shopping list is

Vintage trinket box

Hi everyone, Debs here with a project using some beautiful new WOW! stamps and Foils to decorate a cute little papier mache box in vintage style! If you want to take a look at any of my other projects, take a look at my blog here.

This is the finished trinket box, which started life as a basic little papier mache box bought for about 50p! If you want to jump to the end of the post there is a shopping list of what you will need - or if you can't wait you can jump straight to the WOW! website here!.

I started by giving the box a coat of diluted PVA glue to seal it and give a nice surface to paint on. I mixed about 50/50 PVA to water - you need to stir for a while to get a smooth consistency. Once you're happy with it, use a good paintbrush to give the box a coat inside and out, then leave to dry on a craft mat (I did this out in the sunshine so it took less than half an hour to dry while I enjoyed sunning myself :-)

Once the PVA is dry, give the box a couple of coats of emulsion - leaving it to dry between coats (I bought a little tester pot in an off white shade with an eggshell finish). Now you can start to decorate!

The first thing I did was to randomly stamp the box all over using Antique Linen Distress ink and the script stamp from the Funky Border Strips stamp set. You don't need to use an acrylic block -the best way to stamp a 3D shape like this box is to ink up the stamp and then mould it around the shape using your fingers to press it into place. The nice thing about making a 'vintage' style project is that you don't need to worry too much if the stamping isn't perfect cos it adds to the effect! I then randomly overstamped the box using the same script stamp but with Brushed Corduroy distress ink, stamping off the first generation of ink before stamping onto the box.  I used an ink duster brush and the Antique Linen ink to apply some colour around the edges and corners of the box to give it a more aged look.

I made the embellishments from a separate sheet of card stock. First I used Versamark to stamp the Rose from the 'Simply Amazing' stamp set 4 times, sprinkled with Amber Rose embossing powder and used a heat gun to set. Amber Rose is the most amazing colour with an iridescent finish, which looks different depending on how it catches the light! I don't think my photos have done it justice, but you can just about see the sheen at the bottom of the main image in the photo.

Cut out all of the roses, and snip in between the petals towards the centre. Use an embossing tool and a foam pad to shape the flowers. Don't worry about cracking the embossing powder when you cut out or shape your embellishments - other brands might crack, but WOW! powder is very robust!!! Layer up your shaped roses, poke a hole through the centre and secure with a brad.

The next step is to punch 3 leafy branches from card, press them into your Versamark ink pad, then sprinkle with Verdigris powder and heat emboss - this gives a lovely variegated effect.

Use Versamark to stamp the frame from the Simply Amazing set, then sprinkle with WOW! Bonding Powder and use a Heat gun to set - then rub the gold Fab Foil over the top using a bone folder or embossing tool to burnish, lift off and hey presto! Antique Gold Frame! Use Versamark again to ink up the cameo stamp from the set, and stamp it centrally inside the frame. Heat emboss using Ebony embossing powder. Leave it a minute or so to cool down, then stamp all over the cameo with the Script stamp and Antique Linen Distress ink and cut out.

Use glue gel to fix your cameo to the box lid, and add your shaped rose and leaves. Fix organza ribbon around the main body of the box using double sided tape, and add a bow. Pop some tissue paper inside the box and you're done!

Creating a background with foils

Hello again. My name is Emma (aka The Sparkly Fairy). I was so excited when I received the WOW! Embossing Foils to play with. The challenge WOW! have set this month is Nature or Vintage and the DT have been lucky enough to have the foils to use.

First I created a background using double sided adhesive and layering on two different foil colours - red and gold.  Then I stamped the dandelions from the Make a Wish stamp set over the top using Stazon Ink.

The 3D butterfly is created using the butterfly from the Simply Amazing set, stamped onto heat resistant acetate, covered with WOW! bonding powder and foiled with gold foil. I cut out a black butterfly to layer it on so it stood out more.

Once I had mounted the piece onto the card I used the iron technique to add foils to the small dandelions on the black card. To do this - stamp the image with an embossing pad and then pour over the WOW! Bonding Powder. Place the foil over the top, turn over the card and iron with a medium heat on the back. Gently peel off the foil and the image should be foiled!

The small butterflies I simply stamped onto the black card with an embossing pad to leave a watermark.

Shopping List:

Foiled again!!

Hi All

It's The Crafting Owl here with another bit of inspiration for all you lovely peeps, this time with the new fab foils here at WOW!

At the mo I'm really into making jumbo tags. I cut them out using my die-cutting machine and then decorate them. Here I've inked a background, flicked water over it and then before the water dries, rolled a kitchen towel roll over to 'blot' the water off. This is one of my fav techniques at the mo and I'm using it quite alot.

Then I got a stencil and dabbed over it with embossing ink, removed the stencil, applied WOW! Bonding powder, heated and then quickly put the foils on top. I used pink and green for this one. This technique gives a much more distressed look and I have to say it's my favourite way of using then at the mo. The stamp is from the 'Is it a bird' set.

Here's a closer look...

And for a much simpler look I used the 'Make a Wish' set, with the pink foil.
