Stroke of Midnight - an album cover by Riikka

Hi there! It's Riikka here today to share a sparkling creation with you! It's a dark but glimmering cover with mixed media touches.
You all know that the theme this month is the Sparkles and Christmas? I went just with the first one. My original idea was to incorporate the two but then I get carried away with my idea of the glitter paste and how marvelous that would look on top of black and... well, you can see the result. Not so much "Christmassy", yes? Although the glitter I used in the background is called "Stroke of Midnight" so maybe this cover is my interpretation of the winter night sky during Christmas?

I keep telling that I'm not a glitter person as such, but who am I kidding?! A bit of glitter and shine fits to most projects and like I wrote in the beginning, pairing it with black usually does the trick. A black surface makes the colors sing and lets the glimmer sparkle even more. It's all got to do with contrasts - a dark shadow lets t…

Shimmering snow canvas by Riikka

A sparkling and shimmering hello! The theme this month is "shimmers" and that made me think about the glistening white snow. So, I decided to do a white on white styled canvas using different shimmering and glimmering supplies.

I really miss white winters! When I was small and even when my kids were small, we had a white winter even here in the southern Finland. But nowadays it's anyone's guess, if there's going to be snow or not. Usually it's the "not" option. But with this canvas, I can reminiscent those shimmering snowdrifts. If you'd like to a reminder of the snow as well, follow the steps underneath to create your own icy piece.

Step 1. Cover your canvas with glimmer and shimmer using embossing powders.First ink the canvas using the Wow embossing ink and sprinkle powders on top. I mixed "Clear Sparkle", "Vanilla Sparkle" and "White Pearl" in mine. Do a couple of layers to get a thicker layer on embossing to …

Rainbow in the Dark - an altered paintbrush by Riikka

Hi hi hi! How are you? The August weather is here, sun is shining lower with a golden glow and the nights are turning into velvet ones here in Finland. The summer full of light is almost gone and the darker winter time is lurking around the corner.
I'm a metal head, so when I started to think about the rainbow theme of this month, a song by Dio called "Rainbow in the Dark" started to play in my head. The idea fascinated me, how to do a dark rainbow in a project form. So I decided to rise to the challenge and do a project on black surface with an oil like rainbow glimmer on top.

For the base I chose to use a paint brush, just like you could paint a rainbow with it. I painted the project black with gesso to create that dark background and then used Glintz and Metalline powders on top to add the colors in. These metallic, shimmering powders with translucent color were perfect to create that sheer shine of color. I'm so happy how the project turned out that you can rea…

Hello, I love you - a layout by Riikka Kovasin

Heippa and glimmering, glittering July to you from Riikka! This month we are all about embossing glitters here at Wow Embossing Powder blog. Here's my take on the subject! I've been doing several different project types this year but even though I love mixed media really much I still somehow identify myself as a scrapbooker. So for this glitter theme I thought to do a layout with some glitter touches.

The same applies to glitter as to so many elements in crafting - contrasts heighten each other. So if you want to glitter to glimmer even more, add something mat beside it! So that's why this layout has plain paper elements with the glittered elements, to really emphasize the different surfaces.
If you'd like to see how I made the page and where I used the lovely embossing glitters Wow has in their repertoire in this layout, please see the step by step underneath. To read about the story behind the photo and the page, please continue until the end of the post.
