Color is key when it comes to masculine cards. While blue and green traditionally come to mind, today I'm working with taupe and yellow ochre for this masculine Zentangle card design.
All the details to create this masculine Zentangle card including ink smooshing and heat embossed embellishments are in this short cardmaking video tutorial. Watch here or in HD on YouTube. While you're there we'd love it if you like, subscribe, and share it with friends!
Ink Smooshing
Color is key with masculine cards. With the right colors, you can even get away with a flower or leaf or two. Here I use Altenew Autumn Festival Watercolor Brush Markers in Winter Fog and Yellow Ochre. I chose yellow ochre as it coordinates perfectly with Earthtone Honey Embossing Powder which is used for embellishments.
An ink smooshed background creates the perfect canvas to tangle. My preference is to tangle in the white space. Therefore, my goal is to retain large white areas. I started by squeezing Winter Fog onto my glass mat and spraying with Altenew Iridescent Ink Spray and water.
Next, I pressed a piece of 4.25 x 5.5-inch Saunders Waterford High White Hot Press watercolor paper into the ink. Heat set in between colors to prevent the colors from mixing. Set your WOW! Dual Speed Heat Tool to the lowest setting and keep it 6-8 inches from the per to gently dry. If you dry too quickly by using too much heat or heating at close range, the paper will warp.
Next, ink smoosh with yellow ochre and repeat drying process.

Zentangle Masculine Card
If you're new to the Zentangle® method of drawing, no worries, these patterns are easy to learn. This card consists of three Zentangle patterns: fleavy, crescent moon, and printemps.

Heat Embossed Embellishments
After the Zentangle drawing is complete, it's time to heat emboss a sentiment and embellishments. WOW! Primary Ebony Super Fine embossing powder is perfect for sentiments.
To embellish, I colored in the center vine of fleavy with a WOW! Embossing Pen colored a variety of dots, and heat embossed with Earthtone Honey.
Finally, shade the Zentangle drawing and ink smooshing with a graphite pencil and tortillon creating depth and dimension.
That's a wrap guys! I hope you enjoyed my Zentangle cards this month and will give them a try. For more Zentangle for Cardmakers inspiration, check out my YouTube playlist.

This is gorgeous Amber, the ink smooshing looks great in the the fog and yellow ochre tones and the zentangling done to fit in with the white spaces is fabulous. This really makes me want to combine my cardmaking with the tangling to give a whole new look to what I do, especially for masculine cards which it suits so well. Thank you for the video tutorial too. x
