Art Nouveau with free clipart and Wow embossing Powder!

Hi everyone, it's Sarah here with a project that I have made for this months Wow! Art Nouveau theme.

I had bought a lovely ornate black frame and had been wanting to create a piece of artwork to go into the frame for a while and this months Wow! theme provided the perfect theme.

I love the beautiful forms within Art Nouveau style and hunted the internet for non-copyrighted clipart that I could use. I found this fabulous background artwork online and decided to use this as the Art Nouveau border for my quote. I had a quote in my head based on one of my favourite quotes 'Love is friendship set on fire' but with a new twist that incorporates my love of everything that sparkles. :) I used an Art Nouveau inspired font to create this quote and added my anniversary date.

Experimenting with a new technique of printing (using an ink jet printer) onto shiny card, I created the artwork using two colours of Embossing Powder. I experimented with different card to achieve this technique... some types of card absorbs the ink too quickly and so can't be embossed so it really is trial and error to find which works. Another tip when using this technique is to work quickly... as soon as the card comes out of the printer sprinkle the powder over and heat emboss quickly. Also, be careful not to handle the card too much as the oil from your fingers sits on the surface of the shiny card and the embossing powder will stick to this also creating unwanted smudges.

I used two colours of embossing powder so I printed the quote first and used Wow! Black Twinkle Embossing Powder to emphasize the sparkle quote and then I put the artwork through the printer again (the same way round) and used Wow! Black Ebony Embossing Powder in superfine on the rest of artwork. The final result looks great and even better framed!

  1. Just lovely! Can you divulge what type of shiny card you used? Was it photo paper?

    1. Hi Janet, thanks for your lovely comments. :) I tried photo paper but found this didn't work very well for me (it was high quality photo paper so designed to take the ink very well). The card that worked the best for me is Pearl card as the ink sits on the surface of the card rather than soaking in. Hope that helps. :D
