VIDEO: Abstract acrylic painting with heat embossed highlights - easily transferrable to a card design!

Hello, it's Verity with another video and blog post as a Creative team member for WOW! I've recently gotten into acrylic painting, it is becoming a very enjoyable hobby, and I thought why not add some heat embossing to my acrylic painting for some extra shine and sparkle! I've created quite an abstract style painting which you could easily transfer into a card project by using your inks instead. So for those that are scared of mixed media, then why not start off with something simple like these where there is no rule to follow and no set images which may constrain you.

Abstract acrylic painting with heat embossed highlights  Written Tutorial:

Start off by creating a blended background. I started off with Phthalocyanine Blue and a 1 1/2" flat brush. Whilst this is still wet, blend in your next colour for a smooth blend.

I then added:
- Light Blue Permanent
- Dioxazine Purple
- Cobalt Blue Hue
Bright Aqua Green

Once the background was complete, dry this with your dual speed heat gun on setting 1.
Next, start adding bold brushstrokes in varying sizes and orientations over the background. Switch up the colours and don't be afraid to add light colours over dark and vice versa for contrast and interest. You can also use different size brushes for more interest.

Make sure this new paint is dry before moving on to adding some embossing powder. If the background is wet, the powder will stick to this as well as the embossing ink we are going to add. WOW! have the mixed media brush which you can use to paint the ink directly onto the background. Or alternatively, use an old brush your not fussed about to add the ink. As with the paints, add the ink in various widths and directions of added interest, overlapping the paint strokes.

Next, cover the ink with WOW! Metallic Gold Rich embossing powder and heat set with your heat gun. To finish off, add a heat embossed sentiment from the Altenew Sophisticated Wreath stamp set using you MISTI stamping platform - just remove the foam pad first.

Remember, have fun and play. But if mixed media is a little too intimidating for you yet, just do this process but with card and ink. First, create your ink blended background. The add abstract ink marks by swiping your pads onto the paper. The add gold embossing details and you have a background for your next card!

  1. I love the blue and purple tones of acrylic paint you used on this canvas Verity and the gold embossing is beautiful over the top. A great idea for a mixed media project and as you say just as pretty on a card with inks. x
