CHA Summer 2012

Suzy Solorzano West (US Marketing Coordinator) at the WOW! Stand
CHA Summer 2012, Rosemont IL
Last week saw the WOW! Embossing Powders take their place at the Craft and Hobby Association's Summer 2012 Show near Chicago, USA. The stand was designed to showcase all that could be done with embossing powders, in particular featuring the two national flags - each painstakingly made by the fabulous Tania from moulded blocks of embossing powder.

'Iconic London' by Neil Burley
I was honoured to have a piece of my own embossing creativity on display at the show - you can just see it at the right hand edge of the Union Jack. I enlarged a photo of the bus to 24" square and traced the main outlines onto white coated hardboard (12" square sections bought and cut at the local B&Q - they had to travel!) using pencil. The white board is gently textured and seems to grip the embossing powder well. I then filled in each area with WOW! Embossing Pen before adding and heat setting the powders section by section. I used WOW! Ebony and WOW! Apple Red, both in Ultra High, and WOW! Lemon Regular.

We'll be at the ICHF Hobbycrafts exhibition at the NEC, Birmingham between 8-11 November 2012 if you'd like to see these projects and loads more inspirational ideas in person.

"Count Down to Christmas" Fridge Magnet

Hi, Christine Saunders here again with my blog post for July.

I hate to say it but Christmas is coming (sorry) and like a boy scout I like to "be prepared" so,  I have made a "Count Down to Christmas" Fridge Magnet using the WoW range of Flocks. The numbers can be changed daily as a count down to the big day.

For this project I cut out a Die Cut shape from a sticky-backed Magnetic Shim.  I then cut out some tree shapes from the paper layer that I had peeled off the back of the shim and stuck these back onto the shape half way down so that the flock wouldn't stick to them. Layers of coloured flocks were then added to the shape to create the sky, backgound and foreground. I used Sky Blue, Light Green, Dark Green and Dark Brown Flock.

I then peeled off the paper exposing the sticky tree-shape to which I then added Dark and Light Green Flock to create the look of trees.

I then cut out free-hand some holly leaf shapes,  peeled off the backing paper and added Dark Green flock. Lines were drawn on the leaves for definition. The berries were cut free-hand and Red flock added with a white flock blob on each berry.

I stamped various numbers onto the Magnetic Shim, cut them out then added blobs of Ref Flock and Gold Foils to add sparkle. The "Days to Go" letters are outline stickers. Adhesive gems were added to the trees to finish.

If you make numbers from 0 to 9 you can alter them each day as a count down. This idea can be used for any celebration or special event as you can use the numbers over and over again for any occasion.

Products used. Sky Blue Flock
                       Lime Green Flock
                        Green Flock
                        Dark Brown Flock
                        Red Flock
                        White Flock

Boxed Off

Hi Everyone
This month is anything but a card using flock.
I decided to make a box for a present incorporating the above.  Last month I had the pleasure of going to the WOW HQ with fellow DT's and we did a technique with foil, flock, embossing powder and double sided sticky sheets.  I loved this technique and so I have replicated it for the box embellishments.

Firstly I painted my box with white gesso.  Then using black cardstock attached double sided sticky sheets to it leaving one side with the film on.  Then I ran them through the big shot with spellbinder dies.

I then peeled off the backing (keep this for a further project with alcohol inks) and then used a leaf metal stencil and placed this over the sticky.  The WOW technique came next.  Get a stencil -I chose a Dreamweaver leafy stencil and put it down on the sticky side.  Take the different foils, I chose pink and dark blue and rubbed this into the stencil.  When pulled away some of it stays in the stencil crevises.  After that I used sky blue flock and rubbed this over the stencil, putting back in the pot what I didn't use.

I then peeled the stencil off and sprinkled lagoon embossing powder over the pattern. The embossing powder stuck to the areas hidden by the stencil.  I then used a heat gun lightly over the cut outs and the embossing powder melted and formed ridges in the pattern. I then covered it with bright white embossing powder to give it a vintage look.

I then finished off with a pearl brad.

I then used the new summer distress inks around the edges.

Happy crafting this week

Play Time!

Hi Bloggers, Rachel here again with my creation for this month's blog challenge.
We had the brief to use Flocks this month. Now I have to confess that flocks are not my strong point so I have tried to incorporate them into something that is 'my kind of thing.'

I have made this wall hanging - I have made several of these before in different sizes and using different themes and for me they are great to try out lots of techniques in 'bite size' pieces.

For this hanging I have used:

I hope you find inspiration in this months projects by our fabulous design team and if you would like to see how I made this please follow the link below.

Flock to the country!

Hello its my turn this month, Emma (aka The Sparkly Fairy) to share a WOW! Embossing Powder Project with you. As you may have guessed from the title we were asked to create something using the Flock Powders and it was not to be a card!

I decided to create a canvas using the Flock powders to create a landscape. I cut double sided adhesive in landscape shapes, applied it to the canvas and then rubbed the flock powders onto each section. You could also use the Bonding Powder as a fixative. The overlays are black peel off stickers.

I had never really tried flocks before but am really pleased with the results you can achieve!

Shopping List for this Project:

Sky Blue
Bright Blue
Yellow
Lemon Yellow
Lime Green

WHY GLITTER....

When you can Emboss....
Why not make some wall art for your home. Here I've taken a 20" x 8" canvas and randomly covered it with Versamark, you can cover completely if you want, but if you'd like it to look a bit more textured then miss bits on purpose. Then sprinkle with (one of my favourite's)  WOW Neutral Ultra Shimmer and heat set.
Next punch out a gazillion small butterflies.... I used the Martha Stewart Double Punch, it's approximately 1". I then decided to emboss a few random butterflies with the same Neutral Ultra Shimmer.
Having already cut out 3 hearts, I then glued the butterflies to the heart.
Fill all three hearts.
Then attach them on foam pads to the canvas. TA DA.....
Hugs
Marion xx

Flocking furniture

Hello, Doris here from Cheap Psychology. The first thing I thought of when I saw the gorgeous WOW flock, was how wonderful it would be to stroke a piece of furniture that had been flocked.

Luckily I have got just the thing. A chest of drawers I have not worked on for about a year. I want to cover up of all the pine and so far I have painted and embossed four of the drawers. Today I flocked another drawer and the effect and 'strokability' is amazing!

I experimented with a couple of different ways but to cover a large area, you get the easiest and most even application with spray adhesive. I even managed a two tone effect with the blue and the brown at the bottom. I cut a stencil, and sprayed adhesive for the brown border. The lilac border was cut out on my Silhouette and then covered in glue and flocked.

The handles I painted and used some WOW foil over acrylic paint to distress them. The chest of drawers is starting to look very eclectic indeed. Maybe this is the year when I get it finished!!

I used

WT06 Dark Blue Flock and some WT17 Sky Blue Flock over it to soften the colour. You can cover one drawer with one jar of flock and have a little left over.

WT10 Violet Flock for the top border and WT09 Brown Flock for the bottom shadow border.

Meet the Flockers

Flocked Vase by Neil Burley
Please forgive the word play for the blog post title, I couldn't resist! I've been playing with the WOW! Fabulous Flocks and this decorative vase is the result.

I punched the pink flowers from high tack double sided adhesive sheet, sticking them down onto the vase before pressing the flock firmly onto the top sticky surface. Brush off the excess flock with a stiff paintbrush.

I made the yellow centres by folding a strip of double sided tape in half so it sticks to itself before punching out the sun shapes. This time I flocked them before sticking them down to the pink flowers. The strips at the base are just different widths of double sided tape stuck down and then covered in turn with the flocks.

This project is a bit fiddly with all the double sided tape, but you'll end up with your item fabulously flocked! And the best thing? If you don't like it, peel it all off and try again - those three strips at the bottom had four different colour combos before I settled on this one!
